Who we are

Unite Potrero is a community-building group whose mission is to unify Potrero Hill and make our neighborhood a real community. The group began as part of the Rebuild Potrero effort associated with revitalizing the Potrero Annex and Terrace public housing. Both residents of the Terrace and Annex and others from the neighborhood gathered monthly to come up with ways to build and unify our community. As we continue meeting, residents from all over Potrero Hill have become involved.

Our community-building mission includes all kinds of activities and initiatives: supporting children in the neighborhood, improving safety, creating gardens, and more. The group has participated in two annual community action days that were well attended by hill residents. In addition, committees and action teams formed by the group are working on recording oral histories of Potrero residents, building community gardens, and creating “dream boxes” where neighbors can share their dreams for our neighborhood.

The following are just a few of the activities happening in our community. Click here for more.

Community gardening: One community garden has been started at Potrero Terrace and Annex, and it’s thriving. More gardens are planned for other locations. We encourage you to get involved! Read more >

Dream boxes: We’ve been creating “Dream boxes” where Potrero Hill residents can submit their hopes and dreams for the neighborhood. Look for them in your area, or submit your dreams in our Virtual Dream Box. Read more >

Oral history: Our Oral History group has begun interviewing residents of the Potrero Hill public housing as part of recording the history of the neighborhood. Some of the interviewees appeared at the 2010 Potrero History night. Read more >

How you can participate

We welcome all Potrero Hill residents to join us in building a stronger, more united community. Please leave comments and suggestions here, and join us at our regular meetings, usually every other month on the first Thursday evening of the month, at the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House. Calendar >

    Hello Members of Unite Potrero,

My name is Fatima Duran and I am the Outreach Coordinator for a literacy non-profit called Reading Partners. We recruit community volunteers to inspire confidence and improve the reading skills of K-5 public schools in San Francisco. Currently, we have reading centers in 10 public schools in San Francisco but the school where we currently have a greater need for volunteers is Daniel Webster Elementary located at 465 Missouri Street.

The students we serve are currently reading six months to two and a half years below grade level. Students come into the reading session for two 45-min sessions each week and work one-on-one with a tutor to help them improve their skills. We currently have a waiting list of 12 students in need of tutors at Daniel Webster Elementary.

We have a very structured curriculum for tutors to follow. We don’t require a background in teaching or tutoring, although if tutors have experience in these areas we greatly appreciate it. When a student enters the program, our site coordinator, Marcella Vieraitis, evaluates the students to decide where in our curriculum they should begin. The student’s tutor is then given a “Roadmap” outlining the lessons they will work on in subsequent sessions. For every lesson there is a lesson packet with a practice worksheet highlighting a specific skill .

We are open Monday-Thursday and our tutoring schedule is listed below:

    1) 8:45-9:30 a.m.
    2) 9:35-10:20 a.m.
    3) 12:40-1:25 p.m.
    4) 1:50-2:35 p.m.
    5) 2:50-3:35 p.m.

The first step to supporting your community through Reading Partners is scheduling your shadow session orientation at one of the times listed above.
If you have further questions you may contact me at (415) 306-2263 or Fatima.Duran@readingpartners.org. We are looking to enroll the students on our waiting list by the end of March and we would appreciate it if you could share this information with as many Potrero Hill residents as possible.
