Help enhance Potrero Hill library services by taking short survey

The San Francisco Library is working on developing a community profile of the Potrero neighborhood — they’ll use that to recommend a service action plan for the library to meet the needs of our community.

To help with this, they’ve developed a short survey consisting of 10 questions that focus on how and why people access their public library. Please take a moment to complete this survey:  http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/W2QD77D

The information gathered in the survey will help the library develop an action plan and recommendation for the City Librarian.

This is your chance to have a say in what library services we get in Potrero Hill — we hope you will take advantage of this opportunity!

Community-building event Thurs April 5

COMMUNITY BUILDING GROUP

THURS APRIL 5 AT THE NABE

Dinner will be served at 6:00

An exciting opportunity is coming to Potrero Hill! Recently, HUD released a NOFA (Notice of Funding Availability) for another round of the federal program Choice Neighborhoods. Potrero Hill is in a unique position to apply for a Choice Neighborhood Planning Grant.

The Planning Grant, if awarded, would allow us to create a cohesive Community Transformation Plan, concentrating specifically on education, health, safety, employment, and family services for not only Potrero Terrace and Annex residents, but for the larger community as well. Rebuild Potrero has spent years creating a master plan focused primarily on the physical environment — this would be a focus on the social environment.

The grant application process is lengthy and BRIDGE will be partnering with SFHA and the Mayor’s Office of Housing over the coming month to put it together. Now we need your help brainstorming what a comprehensive Community Transformation Plan should entail and what an inclusive planning process should look like.

I hope you can make the next Community Building Group on Thursday, April 5, 6-8 at the NABE, to discuss this further and share your ideas.

At the Community Building Group, we will also discuss our next community-wide event and the wonderful changes to the Potrero Healthy Living Program.

Hope you can join us!

The Day I Met Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – In Honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day – Jan. 16, 2012

When I was 12 years old I got to spend 10 minutes talking one to one with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I was a junior reporter for my high school newspaper, and my father encouraged me to join the grown-up journalists at a press conference in my home city, Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. King was scheduled to fly to Norway afterwards to accept the Nobel Peace Prize.

Members of the press gathered at a meeting room at the Netherland Hilton Hotel and waited for Dr. King for close to an hour. Finally it was announced that he had come down with a cold or flu and had hoped to make it down from his hotel suite but decided against it. It so happened that my father had a small business and one of his customers was another great civil rights leader, the late Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. After checking with me if I would be interested, Dad asked Rev. Shuttlesworth if it might be OK if just one, very young reporter would be allowed to go and visit Dr. King now that Dr. King was not going to come down to speak at the press conference.

To my surprise, Rev. Shuttlesworth liked the idea, and Dr. King said yes. About half an hour later I was escorted to Dr. King’s suite high up in the hotel, by a then 32-year old Andrew Young, who later became US Ambassador to the UN and Mayor of Atlanta.

After waiting for what seemed a long time in the front part of the suite, two large security gentlemen showed up wearing heavy coats and scowls. They stared at me for several minutes, then smiled and disappeared. Then a voice called to me and I walked into the next room to see Dr. King. He was wearing a white shirt and tie, but lying down covered by a bedspread, and watching the Cleveland Browns playing football on TV.

Dad had helped me craft a few questions. Mostly I asked Dr. King to elaborate about the part of his famous “I Have a Dream Speech” in which he declared, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of the skin but by the content of their character.” That was such a strong thing to say, it was not just about their rights, or children’s rights generally, but it was about virtue and character as well. He had a deep core about him that was as powerful as his oratory. He talked with me about his vision of white and black children being able to play together peacefully and safely, not just in some parts of the country, but everywhere.

Years later I met Ron Kovic, a co-founder of Vietnam Veterans Against the War and the subject of the movie Born on the Fourth of July. I told him about my meeting with Dr. King. Ron thanked me “for working for peace.” The concept of fighting against war always confused me, seemed contradictory, partly because fighting against something is warlike and partly because some wars might seem more justifiable than others, but working for peace felt inspiring.

I began wondering, how much had I actually done “for peace” since meeting Dr. King at age 12? The recollection of meeting with Dr. King, and Ron Kovic’s comment, helped move me in the direction of working as an environmental activist and becoming involved in community.

Tuesday, Nov. 1st at Potrero Hill Democratic Club: Break Up with Your Mega-Bank!

What better way to spend Day of the Dead than to contemplate Death to the Mega-Banks? Too big to fail? No! Too big to exist. Just in time for Bank Transfer Day, PHDC presents a panel discussion on how to let your money work for the good of the community, instead of for the benefit of big-bank corporate profits. Representatives from a community not-for-profit bank and two credit unions will explain the differences between Wall Street banking and Main Street banking, and answer your questions.

WHEN: Tuesday, November 1st, 7pm
WHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro St

A few not-so-small steps for Potrero Hill

How many Potrero residents have ventured into the neighborhood’s public housing, the Potrero Terrace and Annex? Unless they live there, most people have at best driven through quickly, or perhaps walked their dogs in a park on the edge of the area. But on Saturday, September 17, a group of about 50 neighbors, from both the public housing and the surrounding areas, joined in a community walk that took many where they had never gone before.

The walk, sponsored by Rebuild Potrero and organized by the Unite Potrero Social Outreach Action Team, was kicked off at the Potrero Library by community organizer Emily Weinstein and Supervisor Malia Cohen. Then the group began the walk into the public housing in the warmth of the gorgeous day.

We stopped to see and hear about the Family Resource Center garden, where we sampled delicious fruit donated by local business Veritable Vegetable. The garden is the proud achievement of area residents, neighbors, and people from Bridge Housing, all of whom helped install it over a year ago. Its popularity has led to plans for an even bigger garden at Texas Street overlooking the SF Food Bank, a site we walked by next. Look for more news as this new garden develops.

Catching our breath while hearing about the Watermelon House.

The hot day left many out of breath as we continued up the hill, so we were glad to stop for a brief rest by the “Watermelon House,” known for its bright paint job — though not an official stop on our walk, a distinctive house with an interesting history, having been both been a church and a collective, as well as now housing one of our Unite Potrero members.

Then it was on to Starr King Open Space, a quiet piece of nature protected from development, for all to use and enjoy, with wonderful views of the city.

We’re lucky to have this in the middle of our neighborhood — and there’s a good chance that some people on the walk had never seen it, so this was a good opportunity to let people know about this valuable resource.

Face painting at the Nabe.

The walk ended at the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, aka The Nabe, where even more neighbors joined us for face painting, slime making with the SF Exploratorium, tile painting, and other fun activities, plus food and drinks — followed by a free movie. It was great chatting with the neighbors we knew and others we’d met on the walk that day. And it was fun to see kids from all parts of the neighborhood running around enjoying themselves.

One of the kids showing her Potrero Passport, made for the walk: If you got it stamped at all 4 stops, you got an extra raffle ticket.

The children had been an integral part of the day. Earlier, as we walked up the hill, I was flanked by a group of eager children who enjoyed helping to lead the walk, and assured me repeatedly that they weren’t tired and their legs weren’t hurting. One young girl pointed out where she lived, in one of the public housing buildings, and announced that she loved her home. When I asked what she loved about it, she replied, “Everything!”

Little girl walking.

That made me think how differently children see things from how we adults do. This same girl told me that her mother dreams of moving elsewhere, but she would be sad to leave. As she waved to some friends in a nearby playground, I felt that she was really in a community, and I could see what she valued in it. The world can look very different through an adult’s eyes — but as we saw at this Community Walk, even adults can experience real friendliness among neighbors who don’t normally interact with one another, and we can all take steps to get to know our neighbors and walk in one another’s shoes. I hope that when the Terrace and Annex are rebuilt, that sense of community will remain and spread throughout the neighborhood. Perhaps this walk was the first step in that direction.
